Risk management is not just about insurance or financial loss.  It is about managing the entire range of threats to the well-being of an institution.  In its broadest sense, risk can be defined as any issue that could impact the ability of the institution to meet its objectives. This chapter is a resource for individuals with oversight of risk management.  Although it addresses some of the more conventional topics, e.g., insurance, its basic message is that risk managers need to understand the broad array of risks faced by the entire institution, and work with multiple stakeholders to find ways to mitigate or control them.
