 Policy and Governance 

Competencies in this topic area are associated with appreciating and working within the policy- and decision-making structure of the institution. Included is understanding and developing appropriate institutional responses to governmental policies and regulations as well as the economic, political, and social trends that affect the future of the institution. This topic area also covers identifying the appropriate roles for internal and external constituents.  Competencies include:

  • Working with governing bodies and advisory committees, e.g., board of trustees; visiting committees
  • Institutional mission, strategic planning, and decision making
  • Developing institutional policies, e.g., compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; good business practices
  • Establishing needed policy, e.g., formulating the policy; communicating the policy; implementing the policy
  • Legislative and advocacy issues and processes (external focus)
